Co-op Position Overview


We are seeking a motivated and driven Co-op student to join our team in a role that may encompass Project Coordination, Field Technical Support, and/or Quality Control depending on project needs and the candidate's academic background. This is an exceptional opportunity for a student currently enrolled in a post-secondary Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, or related program to gain hands-on, real-world experience in one of BC's most respected heavy civil construction companies.


The specific focus of your role will be shaped by active project requirements and your individual strengths - you may find yourself working primarily in project coordination, embedded in field technical support, or contributing directly to quality control programs on active construction sites.

 

Term Details


  • Term Length: Approximately 4 months (May – August), aligned with standard co-op academic terms
  • Extended Terms: Longer placements (8 or 12 months) may be available for the right candidate, subject to project needs and agreement with academic institution
  • Location: Remote project sites throughout British Columbia. Candidates must be comfortable with and open to remote site-based work
  • Compensation: Competitive co-op wage, commensurate with experience and program level


Strong performers may be considered for rehire in subsequent co-op terms, and high-performing graduates may be invited to join the Jim Dent Construction team on a full-time basis upon graduation. We are proud to develop the next generation of heavy civil construction professionals from within.

Responsibilities

 

As a Co-op student in this role, you will perform or assist with responsibilities across one or more of the following areas:

 

Project Coordination


  • Support the administrative and logistical needs of active construction projects
  • Maintain and update project schedules and track deliverables on behalf of Project Managers and department leads
  • Provide regular reporting to multiple departments and corporate offices
  • Clearly communicate areas of concern related to project deliverables
  • Assist in maintaining accurate and organized project records, logs, and files
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships across all departments and levels of the organization

 

Quality Control


  • Support the implementation and maintenance of the project Quality Management Program
  • Assist the Quality Manager in conducting inspections, audits, and field verification of construction activities
  • Document and track non-conformances, corrective actions, and quality records
  • Review and organize material submittals, test reports, and certifications to ensure compliance with project specifications
  • Assist with material sampling and testing coordination in the field
  • Maintain accurate and thorough quality documentation in accordance with contract and regulatory requirements
  • Support the preparation of quality reporting for clients, consultants, and regulatory bodies

 

Required Qualifications & Skills

 

  • Currently enrolled in a post-secondary Co-op program in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, or a related discipline
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Detail-oriented with a strong commitment to accuracy and quality
  • Ability to work independently while taking direction from multiple leadership roles
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously
  • A proactive, solutions-oriented mindset
  • Willingness and ability to work and live at remote job sites in BC for the duration of the term
  • Familiarity with quality management systems or inspection practices is considered an asset
  • A valid Class 5 Driver's Licence is considered an asset
