DescriptionSUMMARY
The Director, Smart Buildings & Remote Command Centre (RCC) is the business owner for BGIS’s Smart Buildings platform and operations. This role is accountable for building, scaling, and operating a high-growth smart buildings business, including:
- End-to-end P&L ownership.
- Product and innovation roadmap.
- Smart building systems delivery and integration.
- RCC operations and service execution.
- Client growth and commercialization.
- Team leadership and capability development.
This role leads the strategy and execution of BGIS’s intelligent buildings platform — spanning building automation systems (BAS), IoT, analytics, FDD, energy optimization, remote monitoring, and digital twins — delivered through BGIS’s Remote Command Centre.
The Director is responsible for turning Smart Buildings into a repeatable, scalable, high-margin digital services business that drives measurable outcomes for clients: energy savings, decarbonization, reliability, and operational excellence.
KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Business Ownership & P&L Leadership
- Own the full P&L for the Smart Buildings & RCC business line, including revenue, margin, cost control, and growth targets.
- Develop and execute the annual business plan, budget, and growth strategy.
- Build financial models, pricing strategies, and service packaging for Smart Buildings offerings.
- Drive profitability through scalable delivery models, automation, and process efficiency.
- Partner with Finance and Account leadership on forecasting, pipeline management, and investment planning.
Smart Buildings Product & Innovation Leadership
- Own the Smart Buildings product roadmap including:
- Building automation and controls integration.
- Fault detection & diagnostics (FDD).
- Remote monitoring & analytics.
- Energy optimization and continuous commissioning.
- IoT, metering, and data platforms.
- AI-driven alert triage and automation.
- Lead the development of standardized Smart Buildings offerings and service tiers.
- Drive innovation partnerships with OEMs, software vendors, utilities, and technology partners.
- Evaluate, pilot, and scale emerging smart building technologies.
- Ensure solutions are repeatable, scalable, secure, and enterprise-grade.
RCC Operations & Service Delivery
- Support the day-to-day operations of the Remote Command Centre.
- Work with the RCC National Operations Manager to continuously improve the high-performance RCC operating models including:
- Monitoring and alert management.
- Incident response and escalation.
- Work order automation.
- Remote diagnostics and optimization.
- Work with the integration team to implement best-in-class service management frameworks (ITIL-style models adapted to buildings).
- Work with and lead the team to drive continuous improvement across:
- Service quality.
- Response times.
- Client experience.
- Automation and AI enablement.
- Ensure operational excellence across uptime, reliability, cybersecurity, and data governance.
Smart Building Systems & Integration Delivery
- Working with the Smart Buildings manager, the Director will support all Smart Buildings deployment programs and client integrations including supporting the:
- Network and OT architecture.
- BAS and controls integration.
- Platform onboarding and commissioning.
- Data normalization and analytics.
- Cybersecurity and access control.
- Ensure all programs are delivered:
- On time.
- On budget.
- To performance guarantees.
- With documented savings and outcomes.
- Work with the team to develop integration standards, architecture frameworks, and vendor certification programs.
Client Growth & Commercialization
- Partner with Account Directors and Sector Leads to drive Smart Buildings growth across BGIS’s portfolio.
- Lead executive-level client engagements for Smart Buildings strategy.
- Position Smart Buildings as a core digital transformation and decarbonization platform.
- Own go-to-market strategy, sales enablement, and proposal development.
- Build case studies, ROI models, and outcome-driven value propositions.
- Expand Smart Buildings into existing accounts and new markets.
People & Organizational Leadership
- Build and lead a national Smart Buildings & RCC organization.
- Support the managers in recruiting and developing:
- Smart building architects.
- Controls and integration engineers.
- Data and analytics specialists.
- RCC operators and service managers.
- Build career paths, certification programs, and technical excellence standards.
- Foster a culture of innovation, accountability, and client obsession.
- Lead performance management, engagement, retention, and succession planning.
Governance, Risk & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with cybersecurity, privacy, and data governance standards.
- Work with BGIS IT for OT security frameworks and vendor security certification.
- Work with the key managers on risk management for all digital building platforms.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
- University degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent technical discipline.
- 10+ years of experience in smart buildings, digital infrastructure, or building technology.
- 5+ years in leadership roles managing large technical teams and operations.
- Proven experience owning P&L and scaling a technology-enabled services business.
- Deep experience with:
- BAS and controls platforms (Niagara, Schneider, Siemens, Honeywell, Johnson, etc.)
- OT networks and building cybersecurity.
- IoT and data platforms.
- Energy optimization and analytics.
- Strong commercial acumen with experience building productized service offerings.
- Fully developed strategic program management abilities.
- Exceptionally skilled business financial management ability and exceptional financial acumen. Significant experience in meeting financial and business profitability objectives.
- Exceptionally skilled at influencing, persuading and negotiating with client representatives at the senior management to executive position level.
- Exceptionally skilled at building and managing relationships with client representatives at the senior management to executive level.
- Highly skilled at leading and engaging a team of individuals.
- Highly skilled at managing vendor performance.
- Possesses a continuous improvement and quality mindset along with a desire to continuously seek and incorporate innovative practices and technologies in order to deliver value to the client.
- Computer proficiency in MS Office applications in particular – MS Project, MS Excel, MS Outlook, along with ability to quickly learn new applications.
Licenses and/or Professional Accreditation
- MBA or executive business education.
- Professional Engineering (P.Eng).
