Environmental Coordinator – Key Biodiversity Areas

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Environmental Coordinator will assist with the coordination of the Key Biodiversity Areas (KBA) Program with Birds Canada. The KBA Program strives to ensure that sites are properly identified, their values are well documented and effectively managed, and that these places are adequately safeguarded and receive appropriate resources.

EMPLOYMENT DETAILS

This is a full-time, fixed-term (8-week) position reporting to the Key Biodiversity Areas Coordinator. The role is fully remote and may be performed from a home office or equivalent workspace; therefore, a reliable internet connection and access to a personal laptop or desktop computer are required. The anticipated start date is mid-June, and this ad is for an existing vacancy.

COMPENSATION

The hourly wage for this role is $19.70. In addition, the successful candidate will receive a prorated entitlement equivalent to 20 annual vacation days and 12 annual personal health days.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

This role supports Key Biodiversity Area conservation through:

• Assisting with an exercise prioritizing KBAs for conservation actions
• Helping to develop resources for the stewardship of KBAs
• Developing communications resources for a Communications toolkit, and other communications products
• Updating sites in our iNaturalist project (a tool that helps with monitoring and outreach at sites)
• Assisting in proposing KBAs on the global online platform
• Improving the KBA Canada website by making updates to the frequently asked questions, and populating the new photo gallery

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE

• Must meet Canada Summer Jobs requirements
• Background in biology, ecology, environmental studies, or GIS
• Proficient in Microsoft Word, Outlook, and especially Excel
• Excellent time management and prioritization skills
• The ability to self-motivate, as well as work in a team environment
• Willingness to learn new programs, and an interest in conservation
• Introductory level or higher GIS skills in ArcGIS Pro would be an asset
• Basic data analysis skills using R would be an asset

EDUCATION

Although not required, some candidates may be in the process of, or have already completed, a B.Sc. or Diploma in biology or ecology or an equivalent wildlife-related program. Relevant experience or other informal and formal education/training are equally considered.
