The Role

Wood is currently recruiting an Indirect Tax Manager to join our team in our Calgary office; however, the role can be done remotely. The Indirect Tax Manager will be responsible for managing all aspects of indirect tax compliance and advisory support for Canadian operations, including GST/HST, PST, and to a lesser extent, US sales and use tax compliance. This role will involve ensuring tax returns are submitted timely and accurately and advising the business on technical matters and ensuring robust process and good governance. The ideal candidate will have experience with data manipulation tools and a keen interest in the use of AI to support the tax function. The role will involve collaborating with cross-functional teams globally to harness data, streamline processes, and drive business strategy.

Final salary will be based on relevant and applicable experience, education, and the specific skill set and qualifications required for the role.

Responsibilities

Typical responsibilities 

Compliance & Reporting

  • Oversee preparation and filing of GST/HST, PST, and other indirect tax returns.
  • Ensure timely remittance and accurate reporting to federal and provincial authorities.
  • Maintain robust documentation and audit trails for tax filings.

Advisory & Planning

  • Provide guidance on indirect tax implications for business transactions, contracts, and new projects.
  • Advise on tax-efficient structures and identify opportunities for savings.
  • Monitor legislative changes and assess their impact on the business.

Risk Management

  • Manage tax audits and inquiries from authorities.
  • Implement internal controls to mitigate indirect tax risks and undertake internal business specific audits
  • Ensure compliance with Canadian tax regulations and company policies.

Process Improvement

  • Lead governance and process improvement initiatives
  • Drive automation and efficiency in tax reporting processes.
  • Collaborate with finance, AP, AR and Supply Chain teams to improve tax data accuracy.

Stakeholder Management

  • Act as the primary point of contact for internal teams and external advisors on indirect tax matters.
  • Deliver training and guidance to internal teams
  • Support cross-border transactions and liaise with global tax teams.

US Indirect Tax

  • Support US Indirect Tax team with sales and use tax compliance as required

Qualifications

Expected: 

  • A bachelor’s degree, preferably with an emphasis on accounting, finance or law
  • Completion of one of the CPA, CPA In-depth Tax Course, MTax, LLM.
  • Minimum 5–7 years of experience in indirect tax, preferably in a multinational or Big 4 environment.
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian GST/HST, PST, and customs regulations.
  • Experience with ERP systems (preferably Oracle) and tax technology tools.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage complex projects and deadlines.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and influencing skills.
  • Familiarity with U.S. sales tax and global VAT/GST is an asset.
  • Experience with other Canadian taxes helpful but not essential.
