Salary range: $113,146 - $128,412 per annum for 37.5 hour/week (If successful appointee is a non-GN employee and chooses Remote Work, it will be offered at $113,146)

Northern Allowance: $16,328 per year

Reporting to the Manager, Policy, the Legislative Specialist is responsible for developing and revising existing legislation to address the priorities of the Nunavut Government assigned to the Department of Community Services. The Legislation Specialist leads the coordination and evaluation of legislative initiatives for all divisions of the department; develops briefing materials for the Deputy Minister and Minister and facilitates the department’s consultations with stakeholders regarding issues of legislation. 



Responsibilities

The Legislative Specialist will also be responsible for:

  • Conducting research and analyzing information provided and making appropriate legislation recommendations.

  • Researching, drafting, implementing and monitoring new and or revised legislation for the Department.

  • Evaluating existing departmental policies, directives, and programs to determine their effectiveness in meeting government and strategic priorities by identifying the need for and conducting assessments and monitoring public and community reaction to current policies and programs.

  • Assessing proposed legislation and programs applicable to the Department to determine their suitability and compatibility with existing policies, programs and priorities by reviewing proposal objectives.

  • Analyzing the potential political, legal, economic and financial effects of the proposed legislation and programs on the Department and community governments.

  • Providing legislative and planning advice and recommendations on a broad range of legislation and strategic departmental submissions to Cabinet and Standing Committees.

  • Providing legislation and program direction and support to Departmental Regional staff.



Qualifications

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through a recognized undergraduate degree in political science, social science, law, public administration or related field, along with two (2) years of experience in legislation and policy research, development and analysis.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land,Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
