This leadership role is responsible for shaping and advancing safety, health, environment, and security (SHE&S) strategies across a large operational region.
The position serves as a trusted advisor to senior leaders, helping integrate risk management and safety priorities into business decisions.
You will provide strategic direction, technical expertise, and coaching to operational teams while driving continuous improvement.
Working across complex and geographically distributed environments, you will influence culture, strengthen accountability, and promote operational excellence.

Accountabilities:

The Senior Manager, SHE&S, Downstream will provide strategic leadership for safety, health, environment, and security programs across assigned operations. The role focuses on building strong partnerships with business leaders, managing SHE&S teams, ensuring regulatory compliance, and driving a culture of risk ownership and continuous improvement.

  • Lead, develop, and support SHE&S professionals by establishing clear priorities, objectives, and performance expectations.
  • Partner with operational leaders to identify emerging risks, develop mitigation strategies, and embed SHE&S considerations into business planning.
  • Establish governance frameworks, performance metrics, assurance processes, and management systems to improve SHE&S outcomes.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable regulations, internal standards, and industry best practices across assigned operations.
  • Provide strategic guidance and technical expertise to strengthen safety culture and operational discipline.
  • Lead the implementation of SHE&S programs, initiatives, and strategic priorities across multiple business areas.
  • Analyze incident trends, audit results, inspection findings, and performance data to identify improvement opportunities.
  • Oversee significant incident investigations, corrective action plans, and organizational learning initiatives.
  • Collaborate with corporate and functional experts to align regional practices with broader safety and sustainability objectives.
  • Monitor regulatory changes, industry developments, and emerging practices to continuously enhance SHE&S performance.
  • Influence leaders and stakeholders at all levels to promote accountability, ownership, and proactive risk management.

Requirements:

The ideal candidate is an experienced SHE&S professional with a strong background in operational risk management, safety leadership, and organizational improvement. You should have experience leading teams, influencing senior stakeholders, and implementing safety programs across complex environments.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Management, Security Management, or a related discipline; equivalent experience may be considered.
  • 10+ years of progressive SHE&S experience in industrial, manufacturing, agricultural, mining, energy, logistics, transportation, or similar operational environments.
  • Demonstrated experience managing and developing SHE&S professionals and geographically distributed teams.
  • Proven ability to partner with senior leaders to develop strategies, manage risks, and improve organizational performance.
  • Professional certification such as CSP, CIH, CHMM, CRSP, or equivalent is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of SHE&S management systems, regulatory compliance, risk assessments, incident investigations, and assurance processes.
  • Experience designing, implementing, and improving SHE&S programs across multiple sites or business units.
  • Strong business acumen with the ability to connect SHE&S priorities to operational and strategic objectives.
  • Excellent influencing, communication, facilitation, and change leadership skills.
  • Ability to operate effectively in complex, fast-moving, and geographically dispersed environments.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to analyze data and translate insights into actionable improvements.
