Position Summary

The Tax Manager – Crown Royalties is responsible for reviewing and analyzing client royalty obligations to identify tax savings opportunities and ensure compliance with applicable regulations. This role prepares detailed reviews of client royalty reporting, and represents clients in audits with taxing authorities. The Tax Manager maintains expert knowledge of royalty assessment laws and industry practices to deliver accurate, strategic solutions that optimize client outcomes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Reviews client records for Crown royalty refund potential, credits,  and procedural recommendations

  • Prepares and submits written reports supporting DMA’s position for  taxing authorities; reviews and submits periodic status reports to clients; prepares Report of Findings for clients

  • Responsible for client account management on assigned clients

  • Maintains knowledge of  Crown Royalty   regulations, guidelines and court decisions

  • Represents clients during Alberta Treasury Board and Finance audits and provide support and advisory services in defense of claims made

  • Assist Director National Accounts and other business development professionals in scoping and developing customized solutions for new and prospective clients

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in  Accounting, Business, Economics, or a related field required

  • 5-7 years’ prior experience in Crown royalty reporting (GCA, oil sands, freehold and override royalties),  with specific experience in oil and gas properties

  •  CPA designation or equivalent  desired

  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel

  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills

  • Self-starter who can function independently and in a team environment

  • Some overnight travel may be required

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Work Schedule: Regular, 40 hours/week

  • Travel: Less than 10%

  • Physical Activity:

    • Prolonged periods of sitting and computer use

    • Ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech and sounds

    • Frequent repetitive motions with hands

    • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds
